Course Overview

This practical, interactive workshop will equip coaches, teachers, and activity leaders with the skills and confidence to deliver a fun, inclusive introduction to fencing using foam sabres and plastic foils. The approach is entirely games-based, focusing on play, exploration, and fast engagement — enabling participants to “duel” safely and successfully within a short time.

Workshop Objectives

By the end of the workshop, participants will:

• Understand how to introduce fencing in a fun and accessible way using age-appropriate equipment (foam sabres/plastic foils).

• Be able to lead simple fencing games that develop movement, coordination, and tactical awareness.

• Know how to structure a session so learners can safely challenge each other to a duel within minutes.

• Appreciate how fencing can be inclusive and adaptable for all participants, including those who are neurodiverse or have physical disabilities.

• Feel confident in instilling enthusiasm for fencing and encouraging participants to continue into club-level participation.

Learning Approach

• Entirely games-based: Skills are developed through playful activities and challenges rather than technical drills.

• Simple, clear language: Instructions are short, visual, and easy to follow.

• Inclusive design: Activities are adaptable — can be done standing or seated, with paired or team-based options.

• Exploration over correction: Encourage creativity and self-expression; focus on success and enjoyment, not perfection.
